Found this on a different site. Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc You can get it back: ---->Note: This trick works only for windows xp sp2 professional and windows 2000 professional. It does not work on windows xp sp2 home edition. Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes. This opens the group policy editor. Then go to: Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth. Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default." So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well. *Edit* Just made it easier to read. I haven't tried this since I run Home Edition, and you do this at your own risk. ![]() |

i find it sad that microsoft do stuff like this. anyone ever seen the win98 that had a interview video buried in it? microsoft put a 10 min film into the windows program that took up like 100 mb (which in win98 days was alot and -if you think about the fact it is pretty useless to you- still is) and the new windows vista is so large i dont want to think about it. lol i can see the n00bs with vista talking to you while playing a real gfx and power hungry game: NOOB: W00T I GOT A NEW PC WITH TEH VISTA! IT USES 1 GB RAM!!! NOOB: ....HOW COME MY GAME IS GOING SLOW? I HAVE 2 GB RAM AND THIS GAME ONLY NEEDS 1.4 GB MIN? Poor n00bs, they wont realize that vista is the problem and will probably right a angry letter (probably one between r and x ;D) to their gfx card or pc company and all they will get is a response like "you should get a better pc) Im sorry, i just hate vista (Advertisement: Want a reason to get new pc's, well then what is better than the fact you *need* a OS your system cant handle? Found network code a little to secure for your tastes? Want a OS half your programs wont work on? Want to spend your next few months getting updates? Want your games to run at %20 the normal speed? Well if you said yes to this then get Windows Vista. *Note: Getting vista because of this add will confirm that you have said yes to one or more of these questions* ;D) |

It's hard to believe that they'd make such a resource hogging OS. What people want is an OS that's easy on the resources. So, does this actually improve speed? |

Most people these days have a lot of RAM. And I'm fairly certain that Vista isn't going to be a resource hog. That'd be kind of a step backwards. But, if it's anything like XP, you'll be able to turn off all of the fancy features (as I have) to improve your system performance. It sounds more like someone is just angry that they can't afford the $160 OS.
For future referance, the percent symbol goes after the number.
Win98 is a nightmare comparable only to the most foul of Hellspawn. |
