Okay... instead of tanks, we can use "Cyborgs", which are an alternative to the tank in WZ2100. Cheap, easy to produce, basically made to overwhelm the enemy. So we will have Cyborgs as the people people, and there is a special inventory station that turns you into a tank and back if neccessary. Cyborgs man the defense turrets etc.
And if all does not go well... we will give the Cyborgs "turrets" (since the turrets are mounted on their right arm already... sweet!). And with legs that either make them run fast, or more boost energy (slow, but can avoid defensive turrets, or something else, whatever you think).
For the sake of it, lets just concentrate on Cyborgs first, since we need a start line anyway. We MUST implement the research tree tho, that's what made the original so cool...
And no, this won't be a RTS for Tribes. That has already been discussed, it is impossible doing it Unnamed's way. Tribes RTS gets very buggy and mistakes units as still alive and counting toward the total limit...
