Anne Frank was a very bright girl. She always seemed so happy around her friends. Anne lived during the Second World War and the persecution against the Jews. I’ve learned a lot about the Great War that wasn’t so great. Anne wasn’t the only one who suffered and died. Millions of Jews were gassed, shot, burned, hung, and even worked to death before the Nazis lost control, and the Jews were set free. Anne’s whole family was Jewish and they all died except Anne’s beloved father ‘Otto Frank.’ Ann was a cheerful teenager. If you saw her photograph, you never would have guessed that she was ever unhappy in her life. Here is her story.

Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany on June 12, 1929.

As a toddler, Anne enjoyed playing in her sandbox in the back of her house. As soon as she could walk, Anne became a social butterfly! Although she was Jewish, most of Anne’s friends were Christians or Catholics. When Anne was about three or four years old, her family moved to Amsterdam. Anne had a sandbox there too, but since she was older, she could play in the street with her friends. The Frank’s usually spent their vacations and holiday at Landvoort aan Lee beach. Soon, Anne entered her teen years with no one to confide in but her dear diary. Anne woke up especially early on Friday, the twelfth of June. That day was Anne’s thirteenth birthday! She got many gifts that day, but her favorite one was a red and white checked diary from her father. Anne knew that she would get this diary, because she was with her dad when he picked it out. She still acted surprised because she loved that diary so much! Who would have known that a simple birthday present would become an article containing such important history! Anne certainly didn’t know that someday she would become very famous because of her personal life. Her diary was named Kitty. Kitty became Anne’s best friend.

A few days after Anne received her diary, Margot Frank, Anne’s sixteen year old sister, got a call up from the Gestapo. The Gestapo was the Nazi Police. That’s when Otto Frank decided to take his family into hiding. He had previously spoken to his secretary, and she had begun to make the secret annex ready for the Frank family. They were planning to move in July and when Margot’s summons came, it was only June. This Gestapo summons moved the Frank’s plans up and they had to move immediately. Margot left their house first, next cam Anne, Edith and Otto. The Frank family lived with another family and a single dentist in the secret annex for 2 years.

Anne found love with Peter Van Pel, confusion in her relationship with her mother and frustration with everyone else, during her time in the secret annex. Anne wrote in her diary everyday to find comfort through her depression. In the annex, Peter, Margot, and Anne did their schoolwork everyday. They couldn’t use the toilet during the day because of the noise, so they went in a can. There were rats in the attic and burglars stole their food from the storage room. They could never go outside and they had to wear socks all the time to keep their steps quiet. Eventually, the Nazi’s found the secret annex and they were all taken away to the concentration camps where Anne finally died at the young age of sixteen.

Can you imagine the horrors of Anne’s young life? I would not survive even one of the concentration camps that she went through. I think Ann Frank was strong and courageous. Anne Frank’s life is a great role model for women of all ages. Her life teaches us to stand up for what is right, to learn all that you can, to grow, and most importantly, to love.
